MENDELSSOHN Royal Philharmonic Orchestra & Stankov Ensemble (MERIDIAN)

ConcertoNet.com – The Classical Music Network

“The fluidity tussles, engage, releases and re-groups to give a pleasance of genteel glamour and absolute formality. The entire encapsulation wouldn’t be as effective had it not been for the indoctrination by Linus Lerner’s persnickety instruction…candid and permeable”

Scott Noriega – Fanfare Magazine

“The orchestral opening of the D-Minor Double Concerto is conducted with urgency by Lerner, who in addition maintains a lovely sense of instrumental balance and transparency of textures”

Colin Clarke – Fanfare Magazine

“The First Piano Concerto boasts a dynamic first movement, but it is in the delicate traceries of the Andante that Stankov and Lerner are at their most successful, the conductor drawing real beauty from his strings. The finale has a wonderfully light touch to it, with woodwinds in full Midsummer Night’s Dream mode, and Stankov’s legerdemain is impeccable; Lerner is with him all the way…. There is, though, the most delectable moment of counterpoint where Mendelssohn’s admiration for Bach can surely be detected. Again, Lerner marshals his forces well, inspiring the Royal Philharmonic to its not inconsiderable best”

David Reznick - Fanfare Magazine

“Conductor Linus Lerner and his soloists are exactly on the same page. And everyone involved seems to be enjoying themselves greatly…I simply can’t imagine anyone not loving this recording.”

Planet Hugill – A World of Classical Music

“The quality of the music making is high, and this is a delightful way to discover some of Mendelssohn’s other concertos”

Jerry Dubins – Fanfare Magazine

“The orchestra is the Royal Philharmonic, so I don’t think anything more need be said about the excellence of the orchestral contribution, which conductor Linus Lerner handles deftly”.

Ken Meltzer – Fanfare Magazine

“Once again, Lerner and the RPO are first-rate accompanists, and the work does gain in stature and impact with Mendelssohn’s revised orchestration”
